Checked 27 August 2026 against the MRPBA schedule of fees effective 18 September 2025. National MRP Exam sitting fee $787 — the Board does publish this, so treat the $800-1,200 range circulating in candidate forums as guesswork. Qualification portfolio assessment $660, payable only if the Board has to assess your qualifications. MRPBA registration costs $442, not $221: the schedule states that both an application fee ($221) and a registration fee ($221) are payable at the time of application, and NSW registrants pay $174 instead of $221 for the registration half after a $47 rebate. The registration year runs 1 December to 30 November. ASMIRT's overseas qualifications assessment is separate and charged by ASMIRT ($278 pre-approved or $883 offshore, per its published fees). Depending on which pathway applies to you, budget from about $720 (pre-approved, no portfolio assessment, no exam) to about $2,800 (offshore, portfolio assessment and exam). Always check the ASMIRT and MRPBA fee pages before you pay.
The National MRP Exam has two parts: Part A (common capabilities) and Part B (division-specific capabilities based on your specialty). You need 65% in BOTH parts to pass. You may attempt the exam on up to three occasions. The exam consists of up to 200 MCQs over 3 hours, delivered at approved exam centres. It is offered four times per year (January, April, July, October), each sitting running over a nine-day window. Registration opens well ahead and CLOSES roughly three weeks before the exam — that closing date is the one that catches people out. The 2027 schedule is published: the January 2027 sitting (16-24 January) has a registration window of 7-24 December 2026, which closes on Christmas Eve.
You cannot work as a radiographer in Australia until you are fully registered with MRPBA through AHPRA. However, you may work in related roles such as imaging assistant under supervision, patient care positions, or in completely different fields while preparing for your assessments.
The complete process typically takes 12-18 months from initial application to final MRPBA registration through AHPRA. This includes document and qualification assessment (2-3 months), exam preparation time (6-12 months), and waiting for assessment dates. ASMIRT assessments are held multiple times per year.
No, ASMIRT assessment does NOT require a practical OSCE examination. The pathway is documentation-based and includes: (1) Qualification Equivalency Assessment, (2) Clinical Experience Verification (minimum 1 year / 12 months FTE within the past 5 years, per the ASMIRT OQAP application form), (3) National MRP Exam (computer-based MCQ, 3 hours, 65% pass mark in both Part A and Part B), and (4) English Proficiency. However, Australian employers may conduct practical assessments during recruitment, so we provide workplace readiness training.
They are parallel processes, not a queue — this is the single most misunderstood part of the pathway. ASMIRT (Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, formerly AIR) is gazetted by the Minister for Immigration to assess overseas skills, and its assessment is used for ASMIRT membership and by the Department of Home Affairs for skilled migration. Registration to practise is a separate decision made by the Medical Radiation Practice Board through AHPRA, which has three qualification pathways (Comparable Regulator, Recognised International Qualification, and Qualification Assessment) and runs its own portfolio assessment where it needs to. You do not need ASMIRT approval before you can apply to AHPRA, and ASMIRT's English threshold does not govern your registration. Most candidates need both because they need a visa as well as registration — but check your requirements against each body separately, because they differ.
The third edition of the Professional capabilities for medical radiation practice took effect on 30 March 2026. The Board's headline changes are expanded obligations around recognising and responding to acute deterioration — now explicitly including the management of anaphylaxis and the use of adrenaline — strengthened cultural safety requirements, new descriptions covering digital health and artificial intelligence, and a new Domain 6 on leadership and care of the health system. If you are preparing against the second edition you are missing an entire domain. Anaphylaxis training became mandatory from the same date. Separately, and often confused with this change, the Board's Recency of practice registration standard requires a minimum of 450 hours of practice in the previous three years (about three months full-time) — that standard is not new and is not part of the March 2026 update; it has been in force since 1 December 2016.
AHPRA and the National Boards consulted on a draft registration standard for experienced internationally qualified health practitioners, covering medical radiation practice, from 10 December 2025. That consultation closed on 9 February 2026 and, as at 27 August 2026, no final standard, eligibility criteria or start date has been announced. Until one is, the existing pathways are the only available routes. Watch the AHPRA and MRPBA news pages rather than relying on secondhand summaries — this is an area where out-of-date coaching content is common.
