Everything you need to know about ASMIRT Skills Assessment and MRPBA registration

Total costs include: ASMIRT Overseas Qualifications Assessment ($278 pre-approved or $883 offshore, per ASMIRT's published fees), National MRP Exam if required (fee not publicly listed by MRPBA — candidate-reported figures sit around $800-1,200), and AHPRA/MRPBA annual registration fee of $221 for 2025-26 financial year (effective 1 December 2025 - 30 November 2026). Budget approximately $1,400-2,400 total. A 30% rebate is available for practitioners returning from parental, disability, or carer's leave. Always check the ASMIRT and MRPBA websites for current fee schedules.

The National MRP Exam has two parts: Part A (common capabilities) and Part B (division-specific capabilities based on your specialty). You need 65% in BOTH parts to pass. You may attempt the exam on up to three occasions. The exam consists of up to 200 MCQs over 3 hours, delivered at approved exam centres. It is offered four times per year (January, April, July, October). Registration for each sitting opens about 3 weeks before the exam.

You cannot work as a radiographer in Australia until you are fully registered with MRPBA through AHPRA. However, you may work in related roles such as imaging assistant under supervision, patient care positions, or in completely different fields while preparing for your assessments.

The complete process typically takes 12-18 months from initial application to final MRPBA registration through AHPRA. This includes document and qualification assessment (2-3 months), exam preparation time (6-12 months), and waiting for assessment dates. ASMIRT assessments are held multiple times per year.

No, ASMIRT assessment does NOT require a practical OSCE examination. The pathway is documentation-based and includes: (1) Qualification Equivalency Assessment, (2) Clinical Experience Verification (minimum 1 year / 12 months FTE within the past 5 years, per the ASMIRT OQAP application form), (3) National MRP Exam (computer-based MCQ, 3 hours, 65% pass mark in both Part A and Part B), and (4) English Proficiency. However, Australian employers may conduct practical assessments during recruitment, so we provide workplace readiness training.

ASMIRT (Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, formerly AIR) conducts the overseas practitioner assessment to verify your qualifications and competency. AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) is the government body that grants your actual MRPBA registration once you pass the ASMIRT assessment. ASMIRT also offers optional professional membership with CPD, networking, and career development opportunities.

From March 30, 2026, updated Professional Capabilities take effect. Key changes include mandatory anaphylaxis training (MRPs can now administer adrenaline in emergencies), updated clinical deterioration recognition requirements, and refined CPD expectations focused on your active practice areas. You'll need to maintain 450 hours of practice within three years for recency requirements. Basic Life Support (CPR, AED) certification is also required.

AHPRA and the National Boards announced a draft streamlined pathway for experienced internationally qualified health practitioners on 10 December 2025, including medical radiation practice. The consultation invited stakeholder submissions; AHPRA has not yet announced an implementation date or final eligibility criteria, so the standard ASMIRT + National MRP Exam pathway remains the only currently-available route. Watch the AHPRA news page for updates.
