New Streamlined Pathway for Experienced Radiographers Coming in 2026

I've been watching this one closely, and it's potentially big news for experienced overseas radiographers.

What's Happening?

AHPRA and the National Boards announced in December 2025 that they're working on streamlined pathways for internationally qualified health practitioners (IQHPs). The consultation closed in February 2026, so we're expecting implementation sometime mid-2026.

Who Might This Help?

The proposed changes are specifically aimed at practitioners who:

  • Are already registered and practicing in their home country
  • Work in a healthcare setting that's comparable to Australia's
  • Have significant clinical experience

The idea is that if you've already proven you can work safely in a similar health system, you shouldn't have to jump through as many hoops.

What Could Change?

The draft proposes three new pathways that would let experienced practitioners potentially:

  • Skip some of the documentation requirements
  • Have a faster application process
  • Reduce overall processing time

The key phrase from AHPRA is "consideration of practitioner's experience alongside qualifications." Right now, the system is heavily focused on paper qualifications. This would add more weight to your actual clinical track record.

Which Professions Are Included?

The draft applies to:

  • Medical radiation practice (all three divisions)
  • Dental (five divisions)
  • Occupational therapy
  • Podiatry

So yes, diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists, and nuclear medicine technologists are all in scope.

Should You Wait?

That's the million-dollar question, isn't it?

Here's my take: if you're early in the process, it might be worth keeping an eye on this. But if you've already started your ASMIRT assessment or you're prepping for an exam, I wouldn't put everything on hold.

We don't know exactly when the new pathway will launch, what the final criteria will look like, or how much faster it will actually be. And even "streamlined" still means going through an assessment process.

What Now?

The best thing you can do is stay informed. I'll update this post when we have more concrete details. In the meantime, keep working on your current pathway – any exam prep you do now won't be wasted either way.
